Reversing the cause of unnecessary pain

We talked about the importance of taking corrective action so that the body does not develop well-traveled pain pathways. Reversing the cause of unnecessary pain can also prevent deterioration of a condition into something much worse––and perhaps untreatable down the road.


Left untreated, simple conditions become complex.

If a simple sprain of one of your ligaments, in the joints of your back, neck, wrist or ankles goes untreated, it will tend to re-injure more easily. This is because a poorly treated injury creates an opportunity for the ligaments to heal looser than the original, creating an unstable joint.

Mechanical imbalances left untreated often lead to premature arthritic degenerative changes which can be difficult if not impossible to control once established.

Do You Have Unnecessary Pain?

Unnecessary pain is pain that can be eliminated with treatment. People often endure pain for too long before seeking help. Here is why that may be an unwise approach.

Neurological research supports a phenomena I see in practice every day:  the longer a person waits to get treatment, the harder it is to undo the pain.The pain gets “locked-in” by the nervous system’s ability to adapt. Suddenly it takes much more treatment to solve a simple problem.

Are you in the habit of ignoring pain?

Do you have any pain in your body right now? Do you regularly ignore or mask body pain, convincing yourself it is unimportant?

Ignoring pain can have serious consequences. It can train your body to cancel warning signals, allowing situations to get worse without you knowing it. Then you can find yourself in the middle of a big repair project that could have been avoided.

How are your feet?

Did you know that neck, back, and knee pain can actually be caused by your feet? Your feet work hard and serve as the first line of shock absorption when you walk. You may also be one of the many people to experience your feet rolling inward (overpronation), rolling outward (underpronation), have low or flattening arches, or simply foot or ankle pain when walking or exercising. This is why I recommend custom orthotics for many of my patients, to support your feet in getting the job done. (more…)
