Have you heard the buzz phrase, “Sitting is the new smoking?” It seems that with our advancement of technologies, people are sitting more than ever. Where smoking used to be seen as the major detriment to people’s health, sitting for long periods of time is having serious consequences for structural health and cognitive function.

I had a patient come in to the office last week looking for my support to relieve her low back pain. We started the session talking about what might have triggered the pain (sitting too long, overexertion, injury, etc.) and we also talked about where else she was experiencing any pain or discomfort. She talked about pain in her low back, pelvis, and right hip. As I started my Vector Point work on her, I could tell her jaw was in a locked down pattern, which could also relate to her hip and pelvis pain. I asked if she had been having any headaches. She replied, “Well, sure. For several days now. Why?”

Every Chiropractor has a choice of techniques to use in realigning health. I have, of course, chosen to use the techniques that I believe work best. And as most of you know, I am most enthusiastic about Vector Point Cranial Therapy. This is the technique I am using during a treatment when I am holding specific points on your head. It may seem subtle at times, but the benefits are very effective. It is a technique that is rarely used alone, as it is often combined with other chiropractic techniques to form a complete treatment experience.

We talked about the importance of taking corrective action so that the body does not develop well-traveled pain pathways. Reversing the cause of unnecessary pain can also prevent deterioration of a condition into something much worse––and perhaps untreatable down the road.
If a simple sprain of one of your ligaments, in the joints of your back, neck, wrist or ankles goes untreated, it will tend to re-injure more easily. This is because a poorly treated injury creates an opportunity for the ligaments to heal looser than the original, creating an unstable joint.
Mechanical imbalances left untreated often lead to premature arthritic degenerative changes which can be difficult if not impossible to control once established.

Unnecessary pain is pain that can be eliminated with treatment. People often endure pain for too long before seeking help. Here is why that may be an unwise approach.
Neurological research supports a phenomena I see in practice every day: the longer a person waits to get treatment, the harder it is to undo the pain.The pain gets “locked-in” by the nervous system’s ability to adapt. Suddenly it takes much more treatment to solve a simple problem.

Here are some simple ways to improve your flexibility:
1. Create a realistic goal
If you think flexible means you can easily touch your toes, do a backbend, or twist like a yogi, I encourage you to reframe your vision to one that works for your body. Maybe for you, being able to bend over and touch your knees without pain would be a win. Or, maybe you just want to be able to do a side stretch and feel more space in your abdomen and chest. (more…)

I realized recently that many of my patients do not know that one of my passions is music. I’m drawn to compose music because it works on many levels. It can create a mood and it can trigger memories for recollection and release. Because we’re all vibration anyway, music can actually cause a harmonic response in the body’s essential frequencies. All of my music is designed to instill an experience of relaxation and healing.

Body systems often let us know when they are out of balance, but sometimes they have to be out of balance for a long time before we take notice. For example, how is your neck feeling right now? Is it freely moving, or do you feel any strain or tension when you move it from side to side?
Mild, daily neck stiffness may seem unimportant, but the truth is it may be a clue that the structures in the neck are being used in an imbalanced way and can lead to your back and hips being out of balance, as well as increased headaches and even arthritis.

Exercising in the heat can be very tricky. It’s not about just being uncomfortable, there are some real dangers often overlooked.
It’s common knowledge that we humans need to drink more water when exercising in the heat. The lack of water can cause weakness, lightheadedness, fainting, nausea and even total collapse. But the answer to being safe is not just to drink gallons of water.
Exercising in the heat creates a big increase in the need for your body to produce perspiration to cool down the body by evaporation. You may not even notice the perspiration because it can evaporate quickly.

Does your annual physical include a blood test? How to prevent neck pain and feel better.
It is my job to tell you how to feel better and prevent pain, as well as to help you get out of pain once you’re in it. Did you know that you can see some neck pain coming before you feel it? And just by looking in the mirror? You don’t need to be psychic or use special glasses, but you do need to be honest with yourself.
Most neck pain cases that I see in the office start with a series of bad habits and functional changes in the neck that creep into everyday life. A lot of the pain and disability that results from this can usually be prevented. The muscles, bones and ligaments don’t complain until they are really fed up with how they are being used, and that’s when you get pain. That’s also why there are some mornings when you wake up and know something is wrong.

Here’s a question that I’m often asked: “I sit for long periods of time. I know I should exercise to strengthen my lower back, but I don’t have time in my day for a special exercise program. What should I do?”
The documented rise in back pain incidence has been linked to the sedentary lifestyle that many of us lead and as a chiropractor I always try to motivate my patients to exercise.
Our bodies strengthen with activity. It is easy to see that if the muscles of the back become stronger there is less opportunity for injury. If you have been sitting for long periods of time on a regular basis, your muscles have already lost a significant amount of strength.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine more than 31 million Americans experience low-back pain at any given time. Most cases of back pain are mechanical or non-organic — meaning they are not caused by serious conditions, such as inflammatory arthritis, infection, fracture or cancer.
Experts estimate that as many as 80% of the population will experience a back problem at some time in their lives.
As most of you know, I’ve had my share of this particular problem too. So I have a special interest in the pain syndromes of the lower back.
